Ok, half way through the A2Z challenge, I am taking a cheat day. I do not have any movie with any memory or impact worthy enough to write about. I even saw “Ocean’s 8” on Amazon Prime, just to be able to fill this slot. Even though Ocean’s 8 is an enjoyable jewellery heist movie with 8 leading actresses, it did not leave me inspired enough to write about it.
Hence the cheat day!
So, the letter “O” stands for that movie that I can watch “Once More”!
There are many people who can see a movie more than once and enjoy it with the same intensity as they did the first time around. In fact, I know some folks who rate a movie by saying how many times it is watchable. According to them, all movies can be watched once. A really good movie will be given a rating of 4 or 5 visits. Only the really bad ones get a rating of 1 watch.
I am not one such person. Once a movie is done, it is done!
Of course, there are some of the movies that have repeat telecasts on TV and sometimes I end up watching some parts of it.
But, there is one movie that I can watch any number of times.
It is an old, black and white, cult Telugu movie named “Missamma”. This movie has a star cast heavy enough to sink Titanic again! A young and handsome N T Rama Rao, an equally young and handsome Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, legendary actress Savitri, veteran actor S V Rangarao, very young Jamuna, comedians Relangi, Ramana Reddy and others.
I am not sure how many of you are familiar with Telugu, that too old Telugu movies. If you are, then you know about all the actors I am talking about.
The story is quite simple. An educated but unemployed boy meets an educated, unemployed Christian girl and they decide to send an application to be teachers to a village school as a married couple because a clause in the application required a couple to apply. They get the job. So, pretending to be married lands them in some hilarious situations. Things becoming more complicated because our Christian girl cannot understand the Hindu customs of the interfering school founders, who happen to be her long lost parents.
I cannot pinpoint any particular reason why I like this movie so much. But I just love the dialogues, the situations and whole thing itself. It just makes me so happy. If all the movies were put into a big pile and I had to select only one out of them, then I would pick this one!
There is such simplicity in the costumes and sets in the old black and white movies. There is also some amount of honesty too in the portrayal of the characters that you feel connected.
Before I saw this movie on a VHS tape, I used to own an audio tape with the important dialogues of the movie along with its songs. I have listened to this tape so many times that I cannot tell you the count. Some of these dialogues are really hilarious and crack me up even though I know them by heart now! 🙂
This movie was remade in Hindi as Miss Mary with Meena Kumari and Gemini Ganesan. Gemini Ganesan also played the same role in the Tamil version with Savitri. All of them were super hits.
Here is a song from the movie.
Do you have any “Once More” movies? Do share!
The A2Z challenge 2019 is going to be all the movies that have left an impact on me someway or the other. Some have made me think. Some that I like a lot, some that I really hated. But all of them have left a memory behind which makes the movie more special than the rest. They may not be all classics or iconic but they are close to my heart.
