Yaarana (friendship) makes it to my A2Z list for more reasons than one.

One reason this movie is close to my heart is because of its music. So hummable even today.

This 1981 Amitabh Bachchan, Neetu Singh, Amjad Khan starrer is an iconic hit movie. I love all the songs in this movie. One of my all time favourites romantic song is the “Chookar mere man ko“, Kishore Kumar’s rendition plucks at the heart strings. Here it is for you.

All other songs too of this movie are iconic even till today. They are evergreen. How can anyone forget and “Tere Jaise yaar kahan” and “Bhole O bhole” and “Saara Zamana” and “Tu rootha dil toota”

I am in love with these songs but the picturisation of “Saara zamana” cracks me up everytime! The song itself is very catchy. See Amitabh’s dance moves here and his antics with the guitar! He has not played a single note! Notice how his white pants seem to start from right under the armpits itself! LOL!! The highlight of the song is of course, one of its kind, Amitabh’s LED outfit. Also see how suddenly all the audience are replaced by light bulbs! 😀

Apart from the songs of this movie being awesome, the story too is decent. A man sacrifices his life’s savings to make a musician out of his simple-minded yet talented friend. In doing so, the man sacrifices his life savings much against the wishes of his wife, and finds himself in dire straits. The now-star singer then helps his friend in his hour of need. That in a nutshell is the movie. For once, Amjad Khan does not play a villain in this movie. For the audience at that time, it was a novelty to see Amjad as a good guy after his iconic role as Gabbar Singh in Sholay.

Music is not the only reason this movie makes it to the list.

I am blessed with a lot of cousins. We would meet them once in a while during summer vacations. Oh! those train journeys to my grandmother’s place. Those were the times!

Anyway, I am digressing. Another reason why this movie is close to my heart is because, it was enacted to me by my cousin P on one such trip. She was a great fan of Amitabh. She is a super singer. I am such a great fan of her singing. Every time I hear her, I get goosebumps. She would sing and dance EXACTLY like Amitabh, complete with expressions and histrionics. If I close my eyes, I can still recall each of her moves. I was mesmerized.

So in a way, I saw the movie before I actually saw the movie. I love you dear P. Keep on singing.

The A2Z challenge 2019 is going to be all the movies that have left an impact on me someway or the other. Some have made me think. Some that I like a lot, some that I really hated. But all of them have left a memory behind which makes the movie more special than the rest. They may not be all classics or iconic but they are close to my heart.
